Sol Tamargo shines bright in Calgary

Panasonic LX3 . ISO400, f2.8, 1/320 . Flash: Sunpak PF20XD
What happens when you share a meal with two gorgeous world-class photographers?
I was outgunned by the stunning Sol Tamargo and my gorgeous Quin, but strangely didn’t mind one bit
Sol was in town to shoot a wedding, and we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to meet with her and share some good food!
Me sharing sushi with 2 amazing female photographers = lots of pictures, laughter and left-overs!

Not only was it the first time I had the pleasure of meeting Sol, it was also the first play with my newly acquired (and decidedly low-fi) flash: the Sunpak PF20XD
kinda fitting when considering Sol is the wife of Matt Adcock of Flash Flavor blog fame.

Bought it recently in the hopes of finding a super-light flash for high-ISO shooting. It can be triggered via hotshoe or built-in slave and even works with pre-flashing cameras like my trusty Panasonic LX3. Output-wise, it can be controlled manualy (1/1 to 1/32) and has 3 auto-thyristor settings too.

I’m usually a manual-kinda guy with flashes, but the minimum 1/32 power is still too powerful for high-ISO / large aperture shooting. Thankfully the auto-modes work surprising well.
We’ve always worn an extra flash on our belts via our QuiKlips for instant access to off-camera flash, and have added this little guy to our arsenal. I also slipped in a full CTO gel into the business-end of the flash and can wiggle it around to vary the warmth.

Love the quality of light and ultra-portability. Don’t like the mistake on their brochures which states it takes two AA batteries. It doesn’t: runs off two AAA batts.
Verdict is still out whether we’ll find a use for it at our next wedding, but I’ve been known to try stranger things

Thanks, Sol, for taking the time and meeting up! We had a blast with you and can’t wait to see what images you created in our home town
xoxo
Random fact #1: What’s a QuiKlip you ask? Super-fast flash access without the fashion faux-pas. More info coming soon …
Random fact #2: On-Camera light modifier on the Panny was an edamame skin. It directed the light towards the Sunpak’s slave eye with a side-effect of turning Quin’s iPhone green
